Paying for memory care in Florida
Memory care in Florida's Tampa Bay and Orlando metros generally runs in the $4,000–$7,000+ per month range depending on county, facility, and care level. Here's how Florida families actually pay for it.
Private pay
As in most states, the majority of Florida assisted-living memory care is private pay. Expect a base monthly rate plus level-of-care charges, and ask every facility for its full fee schedule in writing — Florida facilities are accustomed to providing it.
Long-term care insurance
Licensed Florida ALFs with memory care programs qualify under nearly all long-term care policies once benefit triggers are met (cognitive impairment is typically an automatic trigger). File early to burn down the elimination period while you're still arranging the move.
VA Aid & Attendance
Florida's large veteran population makes this benefit especially relevant: wartime veterans and surviving spouses can receive a monthly pension enhancement that goes a long way toward memory care costs. Use a VA-accredited representative (free) to apply.
Medicaid: SMMC Long-Term Care
Florida's Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Long-Term Care (SMMC LTC) program can cover assisted-living care services (not room and board) for eligible Floridians in participating facilities. Know these realities:
- Enrollment runs through a screening and a regional waiting list managed via the Department of Elder Affairs' CARES assessment — getting on the list early matters more than almost anything else.
- Participation varies by facility. Each profile on this site shows whether the facility's state record lists Medicaid among its accepted payment forms.
- Eligibility involves income/asset limits; many families use a Qualified Income Trust ("Miller trust") to qualify when income is slightly over the cap — an elder-law attorney can set one up quickly.
Specialty licenses worth knowing
Florida ALFs can hold add-on licenses that matter for advancing dementia: ECC (Extended Congregate Care) lets a facility provide more nursing-level services so your parent can age in place longer, and LNS (Limited Nursing Services) covers specific nursing tasks. Facility profiles here flag ECC/LNS where the state lists them.
